What To Look For In A Travel Backpack

We all have desires to go backpacking across the world – and why not? It is one of the best ways to see the world without needing to be anywhere at a specific time or worrying about all of your “stuff.”

If you are looking for a travel backpack, there are a few different things that you should look for – it is unlikely that you will find all of these things in every backpack that you see, so you may need to choose what is important to you and what isn’t. Regardless, here are the things you may need:

Look For Versatility

If you want to travel with your backpack, you need something that is versatile. You want to fine something that qualifies more as a “travel pack” than as a backpack. Travel packs have suspension strips so that you can carry heavier loads and you can easily get through security, fit into overhead storage, and just carry it on your back.

Even better, these packs won’t thump against your back when you walk, which can eliminate chaffing or noise. You may also want to look for other things in your pack, including a sleeping bag, RFID protection, waterproofing, and more.

Get Some Extra Space

If you run out of space, you are somewhat stuck. You will need to buy another bag on the go, which will absolutely cost you more than it should and be more cumbersome than if you just bought a bigger bag.

Most people are afraid of having bags that are too big, but you shouldn’t be. A bag that is bigger can always be made smaller simply by not putting as much into it. You cannot get space that you don’t have – so if you have an option to get a bigger back with more storage, get it.

Look For Detachable Space

If you are worried about too much space, you can always look for a bag with detachable space. This means you can get a space that you can take off if you don’t need it. While there are some options with Velcro, I’d suggest looking for compartments that zipper on and off. This will ensure that your packs have a good connection when you fill them up.

Compartments Help

Look for a backpack that has compartments. While you are on the go, you don’t want to spread your gear across the floor of the bus station or the airport. When there are compartments in your bag, you will be able to get what you need very quickly and move on with your life.

Look for compartments that are zippered, protected, and well defined. Cheaper bags will have compartments that rip, which will actually just cause more problems.

You Can Never Go Wrong With Handles

Accessibility is one of the most important parts of a good travel backpack. How easy is your bag to move around, grab on the go, and keep a hold of? The more handles your bag can have, the better you will be. But not just any handles. These handles need to be reinforced so that they will last for a long time. You can even reinforce them yourself!

Wheels?

Wheels have a bit of a bad reputation and some people say that you absolutely shouldn’t have wheels. I don’t think that’s true – you should have wheels. However, you need to ensure that the wheels aren’t your only option. Ensure that you have backpack straps as well as wheels.

There are just some times when your back is going to hurt. Maybe you slept on the plane, your bed at the hostel was uncomfortable, or you grabbed too many souvenirs – you won’t want to carry that bag on your shoulders.
