There is something to be said for making a switch to being a vegetarian. While many people are hesitant because it sounds really hard, it isn’t as hard as it seems. In fact, there are many switches that you can make today.
Know that you might still have problems or you may still crave certain things. Even so, when you push through enough, those cravings will start to fall by the wayside and you will start craving healthier meals that do less harm to the planet.
Looking for some easy switches to transition into a vegetarian lifestyle? Follow these:
Trade Tuna For Chickpeas
What will you put in the sandwiches that you make for lunch? If you are a fan of tuna salad or chicken salad, you should know that there is an easy switch: chickpeas. You can make your favorite salad recipe the same way you always did but just use chickpeas instead.
It is best if you mash the chickpeas first and then add everything together. You will get the same texture and the crunch that you love. If you are missing the fishy taste associated with tuna, you can add some nori seasoning.
A few years ago, veggie burgers were pretty bad. They were mushy, filled with salt, and just weren’t worth their effort. Nowadays, you have plenty more options to help you cut meat completely.
To make your hamburger, I’d suggest getting the pre-patted burgers in the meat section of your grocery store. You can get the ones in the vegetarian section, but they tend to not be as good.
Follow the instructions on the package to get the best burger – it is normal for them to still be red on the inside.
Tofu for Chicken
Another food that has a bad reputation is tofu, and that is largely because people don’t know how to make it. The best way to make tofu is to allow it to sit overnight in a marinade of some kind. BUT you have to do something first and that is what most people miss.
You need to get yourself a tofu press. You can either buy one online (they are relatively inexpensive) or you can make one with two heavy books. The goal is to squish all of the water out of the tofu. Once you do this, the edges and outer layer of the tofu will crunch up when you cook it.
When people are switching to a vegetarian diet (not a vegan one), they often eat more eggs. However, with eggs, some people want bacon. In fact, most people will tell you that bacon is one of the hardest switches to make. The good news is that bacon bits are accidentally vegetarian.
Use bacon bits as a replacement in your omelettes and egg dishes. They may not be the big, crunchy pieces that you want, but you will still get the flavor.
Be Sure You Get Enough Protein
The hardest part of going vegetarian is feeling full and staying full. If you don’t eat enough protein, you are going to get hungry and start to eat foods that are vegetarian but aren’t good for you or you will completely abandon the vegetarian lifestyle.
Try to get enough protein in your diet. Use peanut butter, chickpeas, cheese, hummus, tofu, leafy greens, and protein powders to supplement what you eat.
This isn’t as hard as you think it will be!
