When you feel like you’re spending all of your time at work, it can be hard to live the free-spirited, hippie lifestyle that you really want to live. Stop stressing; there are ways that you can still live like a hippie, even if you’re a hippie working for the man.
Spend All Of Your Time Outside
As a hippie working a corporate job for a living, you’re probably not getting to spend as much time in nature as you would like. This is completely understandable, especially if you live in the concrete jungle. This is why you should try to spend as much time as possible outside. Start biking to work if possible. Find a park or a hiking trail close to your house that you can go to when you need to get away. When the weekend finally arrives, drive up to the mountains, or out to the coast.
Forget About Work When You’re Not There
Crappy corporate jobs have a way of taking over your brain, even when you’re not there. You find yourself wondering about that weird look your boss gave you at the meeting on Monday, or whether you’re going to get that report in on time. These type of thoughts keep you up at night, and are the cause of lots of undue stress. My advice is to forget about work when you’re not there. There’s no reason for you to think about working when you’re not even getting paid for it. Instead, focus your mind on the things that you want to do, you know, the things that make you happy. Work will still be there on Monday, unfortunately.
Be Ecologically Responsible
You might think that it would be difficult to live in a modern world as an ecologically friendly hippie working for the man. Thanks to advancements in green technology and the ease of recycling, even the busiest and laziest among us can live eco-friendly lifestyles. For us hippies though, this type of lifestyle should be like second nature. At the very minimum you should be recycling every day and using energy efficient light bulbs in your house. You can take it further by doin things like starting a compost pile and a garden. Don’t support companies that make a habit of polluting the environment. Most importantly, encourage others to do the same.
Be An Active Member Of Your Community
The importance of community living is not stressed enough these days; in contrast everyone tends to be a bit more solipsistic. It is vitally important that we as humans try to build up the communities that we live in. This is why you should do all of your shopping at places like the local farmer’s market, or the co-op. Start a community garden to help feed people in need. It’s the next best thing for a modern hippie, besides actually living in a commune.
Be True To Yourself
Remember that life isn’t about appearances, making money, or impressing people. You don’t need to own the latest iPhone, or pay $500 for a Coach purse. None of those things are going to bring you happiness in the end. Life is about the things that you do, not the things that you have. When you learn to live like this, then you are automatically happier and more at peace with yourself than ninety percent of the American population.
So as you can see, you CAN still live as a hippie despite working a corporate job. Don’t worry so much about what you do for a living, it’s the things that you do for free that define who you are.
